Mrs. Riordan was a resident of Milton for over 60 years and a devoted parishioner of St. Agatha Parish.
Born in Hyde Park in 1921, she was the only child of Sara Higgins from Galway, Ireland, and Enda Timothy Concannon from Connemara, Ireland. She often used the expression “narrowback,” which is an affectionate slang term for a first-generation American born of Irish parents.
She grew up in the Readville and Corriganville sections of Hyde Park.
In 1936, when she was 14 years old, she went abroad on the steamship S.S. Scythia to Ireland. Little did she know at that time that six-years earlier her future husband emigrated from Killoglin, County Kerry, on the same ship. This was her first trip to Ireland, where she stayed for the summer and met all of her Galway cousins and the large Higgins clan.
She had many close friends. They started out as the “Bachelor Girls” and as they grew older, married and had families of their own, they became known as the “Club Girls.”
Her first job was at the old Woolworth’s 5 and 10 cents store where she worked for 29 cents an hour. Her future husband often stared in the window, gazing at her fondly while on-route delivering groceries.
She graduated from Boston Clerical and prided herself in her grammar and clerical duties. She wrote poems and often read them at get-togethers.
She was married in 1945 while her husband was on leave from the Navy. During World War II, she worked in the Naval Office lugging the old, heavy typewriter up and down Atlantic Ave. in Boston promoting war bonds to support the troops.

Her life revolved around her family, her church and St. Agatha School. She was very involved in volunteer work.
On St. Patrick’s Day, she cooked Irish and brown breads for friends and family. She would cook for days to prepare for this and thoroughly enjoyed keeping this day holy.
As her children grew older, she found jobs where she could still greet the kids as they came home from school. In the summers, she worked up at Cunningham Park and when the kids were in school, she worked as a bookkeeper at the Milton Bank and Trust in East Milton Square. She also took the town census for a number of years.
She was a gardener and had flower gardens in the summer. She crocheted colorful afghans and quilted many hand-sewed bedspreads.
She was always put herself last after God and family. When the image of Mary appeared on the window at Milton Hospital, she wrote a poem called “Our Lady of Milton” that was published in the Milton Times. She attributes her cancer cure to “Our Lady of Milton.”
She had an interest in people and listened intently to their stories. She was a very warm, sincere, gentle lady with a beautiful smile that could warm any soul. She always saw the positive and good in people and everyone always felt good after seeing and talking with her.
